Friday's here and well, i have been busy so many things i haven't been able to upload much here. Working on a friday night is no fun, so i considered making it worth my while by bringing something alcohol-laced (hey, who says you can't mix business with pleasure? Besides this completely brings happy hour to a whole new level. hahaha!)
I made mine with lemon instead of the orange, but that's just because i had some on hand and didn't want to go all the way to the store just to get some. hehehe. Taste testing was loads of fun, with an added buzz of cold Cider. YUMMM. :-)
While surfing the net, i came across this vid which gives a tribute to the musician who sang this song --- he is pretty amazing, yet like most amazing singers of the times, he died at the early age of 38. Israel "Iz" Kaʻanoʻi Kamakawiwoʻole sang this amazing version of one of my favourite songs (you probably heard this in 50First Dates).
Every time i hear this it always makes me smile and want to cry at the same time.

Jemaine: You guys dont really know who you're dealing with Mugger: (John): Oh yea, and who exactly are we dealing with? Bret: I'm the mother flippin' Rhymenocerous
It is damn interesting to know that this started with an actual band. Yes, the actors who play fictional musicians are really musicians, starting their career in music and widely received for its quirky and catchy tunes.
Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie, otherwise known as the Flight of Conchords (or, as Rhymenocerous & Hiphopopotamus, their rap names) are from Wellington, New Zealand, and known for their folk tunes and uproariously funny lyrics. The series is an off shoot of sorts from their comedy and music, which initially became the basis of a BBC radio series and later on to this.
The series revolves around the pair (a fictionalized version of the musical duo, played by the musicians themselves) as they try to achieve success in New York City as a band and tries to develop an "American fan base". Uprooted from their native New Zealand, each episode weaves their music into each plot, with some intersting and often comical results.
The regular cast includes fellow comedians Rhys Darby as Murray, Arj Barker as Dave, Kristen Schaal as Mel, Dan Fleury as Doug and Eugene Mirman as Eugene, as well as many other comedians in guest starring roles.
It's hilarious, witty and often tongue in cheek funny, and its music will make you laugh and nod to its catchy tune :-D Definitely something NOT to be missed!
Happy Weekend reading! Got my copy of the Night Monkeys, a collection of short stories for kids written and illustrated by prize-winning authors and illustrators! Included in this is my friend Herb's amazing illustration (2nd picture) and her story, thePeace Crane. Yay! LOVE IT!!! You guys should DEFINITELY get a copy! Also in my reading list is my much-awaited copy of Alan Moore's The Killing Joke (yes, i finally have a my own copy! and it's hard bound too!) I LOVE IT!!! It's maniacally good --- if there is such a word --- and yes, i can see where Heath Ledger may have gotten his inspiration from for his version of the Joker. :-D
Fantastic! When there's a will, well... there's a loophole somewhere.
Scrabulous strikes back with a vengeance! Not only did the creators do a one-up against Hasbro, the game is back on Facebook, and they also came up with a new Facebook app, Wordscraper.
Best part? They have their own website for online playing!
ok, so due to my terminally annoying sleeping habits, i was NOT able to watch the films i wanted to see at Cinemalaya (sorry....) But, despite my lack of support i am happy to announce that the filmfest has garnered some very positive reviews. Snaps and Mad Props to Cinemalaya! Here are the winners for thye recent Cinemalaya filmfest:
Francis Xavier Pasion's "Jay" won Best Full-Length Feature Film; Milo Tolentino's "Andong" won Best Short.
"Jay" was cited for its "sheer originality and energetic storytelling;" and "Andong" for its "devoted and humorous look at a boy's obsessions."
Chris Martinez won Best Director (Full-Length) for "100."
Tara Illenberger's "Brutus" won Jury Prize for Full-Length; Anna G. Bigornia's "My Pet" Special Jury Prize for Short and Sheron R. Dayoc's "Angan-Angan" won Special Jury Citation.

The audience Choice award was won by Chris Martinez for "100" (Full-Length) and by Mark V. Reyes for "God Only Knows" (Short).
Kudos to the peeps who won, especially Tara! Mad props to you! Check out a great review of her film here.
hello! i am now addicted to Lipstick Jungle, that sneaky, sassy sexy new series by SATC author/creator Candace Bushnell. It's fierce competition against ex-coproducer Darren Star's Cashmere Mafia, which, as rumor has it, is a flimsy copy of Bushnell's work.
After getting my copy of season 1 and going through the episodes like the chocolate junkie that i am, i can honestly say that:
A) The clothes and shoes may be a little too conservative, but these women definitely know how to make them work.
B) The guys are HOTT --- so much skin from the masculine!
C) This would probably be Samantha,Miranda & Co. --- parties, sex and power, and all the scandal you can imagine.
D) it's not SATC, but it definitely has its moments.
The cool thing about Lipstick Jungle is that it's a world that VERY few women actually get themselves into --- unlike Carrie and Co., who have jobs that most women can easily relate to, the LJ girls (Wendy, Nico and Victory) are in the fashion and magazine business, that harsh and oh-so-cruel (and sometimes amazingly shallow) industry, and have some pretty complex lives and relationships entwined with it.
The women here are fierce, and in control, so much so that it seems that they are indestructible. There is so much drama in varying degrees, from singlehood issues to the marriage and cheating escapades, not to mention those complicated business deals which take up a lot of the storyline (at least it's not just the whole "i'm so heartbroken and my guy is such a bother" scenario). Admittedly, the drama is too heavy that sometimes i resist the urge to fast forward to less cringing scenes --- but the humor, injected so often is refreshing, and admittedly pretty snarky at times.
So yeah, i guess it's more like Desperate Housewives in the City --- with a side of cosmos during Fashion week.
Literally translated "Life in Pink", La Vie En Rose is a look into the life of Edith Piaf, legendary french singer during the 1930's. The English release title is the name of Piaf's best-known song (best heard in french, of course, though translated versions have been more mainstream). The film's original title means "the kid", because Piaf was known as "La Môme Piaf" or "The Kid Sparrow."
Fractured in its storyline, the film delves into Piaf's life, a largely non-linear series of key events evoked from her memories. Like her life, the storyline is jagged, intense and tumultuous, often echoing the resonant and powerful singing Edith is famous for. Although scenes often jump back and forth across decades (evoked as flashbacks mostly from within Edith's memories), with parts of her childhood take up much of the first part, her bouts with her disease, reflections on her impending death, and the performance of what is perhaps her signature song, "Non, je ne regrette rien".
The film is entirely in French, which i felt was a good thing, for it captured the essence of the times (Paris and New York during that era) as well as the intensity of emotions showed by the cast. The director, Olivier Dahan, used recordings of Edith almost entirely for the movie, which added much color and authenticity into the film, making it more cinematic and bold.
With its amazing story and strong cast, this 2007 French film captured Oscar attention with its amazing actress, Marion Cotillard, who won Best Actress in the recent Oscar bid for her role as the legendary Edith Piaf. Indeed, Ms. Cotillard largely is responsible for making this film a success, with her take on the troubled yet ferocious singer so convincing and remarkable. For her performance as Piaf, Marion became the first actor or actress to ever win an Academy Award for Best Actress ("Oscar") for a performance entirely in French.
The movie is intense, subtitled and not exactly for those who may want something milder and humorous (like Amelie). But for those who may watch it, it's an experience in itself --- from Edith's singing, to Marion's impeccable capture of the singer's eccentricities, it is truly a treat to watch.
A feature film adaptation of the hit HBO series, it is a four year much-awaited movie by fans everywhere, and yes, it did not disappoint. It's three years later after that final scene and the movie recaps in its short introduction of what has happened over the course of the 6 seasons.
The next cycle of drama, comedy and life affirmations deal with the ever after part of each character's life, with Carrie's upcoming nuptials, Charlotte's motherhood, Miranda's Brooklyn home life and Samantha's cross-country living. The reality is in, yet the film deals with heavy issues with grace and flair --- and definitely a lot of girl power.
Amazingly, the film is nicely paced, without the drag i was anticipating (given that the usual episode lasts only an hour, max, how will they ever extend it to a good feature film length?) The humor is quick and the dresses are fabulous, and yes, who could NOT notice all those shoes!?!?
While skeptics may think that this is a chick flick, i was surprised to see quite a number of guys who patiently came with their dates chuckling along throughout the movie. The film is quick, witty and also heart-warming, with a couple of scenes that made me cry (well, almost). Though there were a couple of cheesy lines, and almost screwball punches, it was a super-sized episode, wonderfully keeping the feel and essence of the show throughout its two hour run.
Call me a die hard fan, but the movie made the wait worthwhile --- Like the signature logo, the movie is hot pink, glittery and absolutely fabulous!

Who hasn't seen Tootsie back in the day? of course, i was only 2 years old when that showed on theatres, but it was one of the more memorable movies i have seen of Dustin Hoffman. The comic timing was impeccable and the cast (which included Mr. Pollack as Dustin's character's agent) was so eclectic you can't help but love it (and yes, that cheesy theme song whose title is mangled by everybody i know because of its catchphrase lyrics! Something's telling me it might be you...all of my life...) That movie (as weird as it may be) made me recognize Sydney Pollack as director and actor --- definitively, in my brain.
As a director, he has more notable works ---Out of Africa, which gave him two Oscar nods, and The Way We Were, which made me bawl every time i saw that infamous scene outside the hotel 10 mins before the movie ends. As producer he was involved in very good films as well, including Michael Clayton, The Talented Mr. Ripley, and Cold Mountain, among others. His eclectic and amazing talent was not spared from the tube too, guesting in several shows like Just Shoot Me! and Will and Grace in which he plays a recurring role as WIll's dad.
What's the point in all this? Aside from starkly reminding me how fast time flies, i realize that more and more of the "greats" are dying out on us. I hope new blood in the biz can live up to, if not surpass, the beauty they have made in film.
Now i'm off to find myself a Pollack collection and relive the loveliness of his works.
This is what 3am phonecalls about love, life and melancholy thoughts can do to you --- get wired on too much John Mayer. This song is pretty cool though, it was released last year as a single and has been one of my ultimate great finds for 2007. :-) Enjoy!
